Basket-Making Workshop

Trip Description:     Stephanie Wood-Craig is the collections specialist at the Chachalu Tribal Museum and Cultural Center at Grand Ronde. She earned a degree in cultural anthropology, folklore, and museum studies from the University of Oregon. An accomplished basket maker, she teaches and interprets for museums and galleries around the state and beyond. She is from a well-known basket weaving family at Grand Ronde.

She will lead a workshop on how to construct a simple tule rush or cattail basket involving twining and plaiting. Local basketry and plant use traditions will be shared. The workshop will focus on making a container, so participants are encouraged to bring a plastic or metal water bottle around which they may weave their basket. An exploration of the plant materials will be followed by a demonstration of how to construct the baskets.

Special Considerations:     Bring a plastic or metal water vessel of the desired shape for your basket.


Meeting Place and Time:     Trip # 24 leaves at 9 a.m. from Spirit Mountain Lodge entrance. Plan to arrive 30 minutes before departure time to meet your group and arrange carpools.

Driving Miles and Time from Spirit Mountain Lodge:     1.25 miles, 5 minutes on paved roads
